I’ve finally left the corporate world behind
By Marika on Nov 30, 2009 in My Progress
It is exactly one year and one week since I’ve decided to leave the corporate world behind and finally become my own boss. I didn’t know at the time what to expect, I only knew that I have to find my own way instead of letting others dictate my life.
Many people are content with this and are happy to work for a boss due to the job security that this offer. Or does it? It might have been true 20 or even 10 years ago, but nowadays bosses can fire a person as fast as flipping a switch and it has happened too many times to count. We all know of somebody who got fired for various reasons, and most of them had nothing to do with the person being unprofessional or unproductive. Working at one company until retirement is something of the past.
Throughout my 20 years of working in the corporate world, I’ve seen it all and I’ve had enough. This is why my decision when I wrote my first blog post on the subject on November 24 last year. The truth is I was never really ‘clicking’ with bosses. I’m a rebellious type and I had always problems with authority figures, particularly when they happened to be my bosses
I’ve first started with jewelry but that is lucrative for very few and I’ve realized soon enough that if I start treating jewelry making more than as a hobby, I will get bored of it soon, so I slowed down with it.
And then it was internet marketing.
I’ve learned a lot and I still am a newbie at it. But I’m plowing ahead slowly slowly and I am positive that one year down the road from now I will have my income on autopilot as many other also have. One year ago I wouldn’t have believed that I would quit my job in a year only, yet here I am. So I am confident that I can reach my new goal as well.
I know that my life will be a bit more difficult since not working for a boss means that you’re paying your own salary, so slacking off is no longer an option, the boss is not there to pay you for browing and watching Youtube videos. Sometimes I’m putting in as many as 11 hours on setting up new websites, on getting backlinks to them, on writing articles, but I’m happy. I’m happy that I can do it in my own time. I can wake up any time I want, I can spend more time with my husband, and I can work until late at night without worrying that I have wake up the next morning to run to my day job. For now, that’s all it matters.

Hi
We’re on a parallel path!
We arrived in Cyprus on 13 December 2008 (having sat in 13A and 13b on Cyprus Airways A320 on the way out). Look fate in the eye I say!
We too have left the corporate world long behind and we too are doing some of the things you are.
Where do you live in Cyprus? We’re near Polemi. If you’re nearby, it’d be good to catch up for a coffee at some point.
Best
Mike

Well done
I’ve been following your blog from the beginning and yeah, I wouldn’t have imagined that only after a year you will be your own boss. Keep it up and good luck in all your future ventures.

Hey guys (and gals), many thanks for the encouragements
It’s good to be my own boss. I haven’t been so stress free as I was this whole week for many years. I truly don’t miss the corporate world!
Mike I’m in Nicosia. No clue where Polemi is, I’ll have to look it up. Is it somewhere nearby? When you intend to come to Nicosia drop me an email at marika dot charalambous at gmail dot com and we can meet for a coffee.

Congratulations.
I got here via your Flippa profile and I’ve been a fan of your work since FlowerArrangingHobby.com (Sitepoint listing, remember that one?).
All the best.

Hi Lorita, yes I remember that one, it was my very first site sold at Flippa (Sitepoint at that time).
