Making top x lists is definitely worth it

I admit, I’m not only an internet junkie, but also jewelry designer in my (do I still have some?) spare time. I have a personal blog for my jewelry started a few years back. Now why do I mention this?
Well, earlier this year I put together a list of top 4 free tutorials from around the web for a particular silver jewelry technique, called herringbone weave. This style is highly sought after and not everybody gets the hang of it. It took me a while to search, but finally I found 4 free tutorials on the net teaching it. Everybody else is charging to let you know it’s secret.
I’ve noticed recently that my traffic really picked up on that blog, and a large majority of the visitors came through the search keywords ‘free herringbone tutorial‘ (singular and plural).
Now since it’s really difficult finding free tutes on this technique and a lot of people are searching for them, somehow my post became #1 on Google (and other search engines like search.conduit.com) for these keywords, also #1 for ‘herringbone tutorial’, and #4 for ‘herringbone tutorials’ - notice I’m #1 even without the keyword ‘free’. I guess now I truly understand the power of viral marketing
And honest to god, I haven’t even really promoted this particular post. Somehow when I am dealing with jewelry and I’m on that other blog, my internet marketing side of brain is shutting down, and my creative side of brain is taking over!
So lesson learned: if you have a blog, make sure you use the power of viral marketing. Keep writing those ‘top x’ lists and post them, as people will find them and will come back for more!
